Television Without Pity Week, part deux

A few of the writers from Television Without Pity have written novels or other books. One of these is Pamela Ribon, whose first novel is called Why Girls Are Weird. Ribon, the author of the very popular blog, pamie.com, modeled the book somewhat after her own life. The main character, Anna Koval, starts a blog out of boredom at her school library job. She wanted to be an actor, but that's not really working out, so she's taken this job as a fall back and sort of hates it. Anna, writing as "Anna K", turns out to be a hugely popular character and wins the hearts of teenage, college age girls and creepy guys alike. Throughout the book, Anna deals with her breakup from Ian, her emotionally manipulative ex-boyfriend who she pretends on her blog to still be dating; her father's fatal illness and her sudden fame as a blogger extraordinaire.

I liked the book for the most part, but had one major qualm with it. One of the people that starts writing to Anna K is a guy by the screen name of LDobler (as the TWoP people would say: like, ha ha...not). Kurt (his real name) and Anna begin flirting over email and IM and instead of Kurt coming across as funny, quirky and a nice antidote to Ian; he comes across as totally creepy and stalkerish. This almost ruined the book for me, but in the end I did enjoy it. You can also check out the follow up, Why Moms Are Weird.
